Students of SALCC's Media Club and Digital Humanities programme were rewarded for their participation in Carib Excellence — a project aimed at strengthening ties between OECS countries and their French counterparts, namely Martinique and Guadeloupe

The project, “Carib Excellence,” is led by CO.RE.CA, a research based Youth Movement from Guadeloupe, in association with The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College as a partner institution.

A prize giving ceremony was held at SALCC on Tuesday May 16, 2023 , and served as the culminating activity of the year-long project.

The participating students were required to produce short documentaries focusing on areas of cooperation and sustainable development within their native country, in this case being Saint Lucia. The documentaries were evaluated based on the choice and treatment of their subject matter, as well as their script, storytelling, and production quality.

The prize for First Place went to the group known as The Eco Heroes, consisting of students Ana St. Prix, Claire Edwin, Jessea James and Danielle Baptiste. Their documentary centered around the topic of Waste Management.

The group Fawna Old Guard, consisting of George Mathurin, Jamal Jules and Ethan Sevrin placed second in the competiton. Their video focused on the topic of Eco-tourism — specifically why it is important in regard to Saint Lucia's natural beauty.

About Carib Excellence

On March 14, 2019, Guadeloupe joined the Organization of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) as an associate member.

In 2021, for the second anniversary of its membership, the Regional Council of Guadeloupe launched the call for projects, "I Cooperate with the OECS Countries" in order to forward the initiatives allowing the population a better appropriation of its Caribbean environment. The Carib Excellence project forms part of, and is funded by, this initiative.

This project aims to strengthen the sense of belonging of the population, and in particular the youth, to the Caribbean basin, and more particularly with the constituent territories of the OECS.

The project is offered through three main activities:

  • Coop'École: to teach young Caribbean people the challenges of cooperation through 8 videos to broadcast.
  • Caribbean education and appreciation (CEA): to promote the academic work of young Caribbean people through an academic competition, the creation of an online library and the production of videos to broadcast.
  • Caribbean WOL (Way of Life): to capitalize on the good practices of our territories in terms of the environment and sustainable development by broadcasting testimonial videos.
