Overview

The Defensive Driving Course (DDC) is an interactive, eight-hour course that is delivered 100% online and synchronously. The course is accessible to all persons who currently possess a Provisional Driver's License.

In the interest of health and safety, convenience and flexibility, the entire process is conducted electronically, from registration and payment, to attendance and certification, and renewal of Driver's Licenses.

DDC is offered by the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, through its Professional & Lifelong Learning Unit, in collaboration with the Transport Department of the Ministry of Economic Development, Housing, Urban Renewal, Transport and Civil Aviation.

Renewal of Driver's Licenses is now a seamless process, with online classes and the introduction of The DigiGov Platform, which allows users to insert their Defensive Driving Certificate number, or upload a copy of the DDC certificate. Consequently, regardless of where in the world one resides, they are able to register, attend the course, and renew their Driver's License from their current location.

Upon successful registration and verification of payment, participants will receive a zoom link to the next available session. A Certificate of Participation is issued to all participants who attend both sessions for the entire duration of the course.

The Importance of Defensive Driving

According to statistics from the World Health Organization, every year the over 1.3 million lives are lost as a result of road traffic crashes. In addition, approximately 50 million more people suffer non-fatal injuries, a significant number of whom incur some form of disability as a result of these injuries.

Closer to home, according to the Traffic Department of the Royal St. Lucia Police Force, between 2015 and 2020, St Lucia recorded over 5,000 vehicular traffic accidents, including those resulting in fatalities and serious injuries.

In most cases, road traffic accidents result in considerable losses, not only to the individuals involved in those accidents, but to families and to the nation as a whole. The DDC is therefore offered in the interest of Road Traffic Safety for all.
