The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, in collaboration with the The Vaughan A. Lewis Institute for Research and Innovation (VALiRi), hosted a panel discussion titled “From Brain Drain to Brain Gain: Reimagining Research for Saint Lucia” on Friday, 18 September 2026.

The discussion brought together researchers, academics, educators and other stakeholders to examine the challenges and opportunities surrounding research, knowledge development and the retention and return of skilled professionals in Saint Lucia.

The panel featured Dr. Aviane Auguste, Dr. Winston Phulgence, Ms. Chelsea Branford, Dr. Alisha Eugene-Ford and Dr. Kedhma Dorh, with H.E. Julian Du Bois serving as moderator.

The conversation explored the concept of brain drain, the loss of skilled professionals through migration, while considering how Saint Lucia can create an environment that encourages research, innovation, collaboration and the meaningful contribution of local and returning talent.

As a tertiary institution committed to developing human capital and supporting national development, SALCC continues to recognise the importance of research and knowledge creation in addressing the challenges facing Saint Lucia. Platforms such as this panel discussion provide opportunities for dialogue among academics, researchers, students and the wider community.

The event was held at the NTN Studio from 10:00 a.m. and was also made accessible to the public through Zoom, with the discussion livestreamed by the National Television Network (NTN). The panel discussion forms part of ongoing efforts to encourage greater engagement with research and to strengthen conversations around how Saint Lucia can leverage its intellectual resources to support sustainable national development.
