About Primary Education

The Bachelor’s degree in Primary Education combines course work, with practical experiences in primary-level educational settings. Courses are delivered either virtually or in-person, and are designed to advance learners' teaching specializations.

The first two years of the programme grounds students in the four content areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science and Social Studies. The final two years are devoted to enhancing their competencies in one of these areas.

Learning Outcomes

  • Practitioners of this programme hone their skills in communication and technical awareness, ensuring a lesson's comprehension by their students, while also leveraging online tools to assist in learning delivery.
  • Teachers enrolled gain an appreciation for the diversity to be found in multi-cultural educational settings. This fosters the development of an instructor who is caring, empathetic, considerate and people-oriented. These are all necessary for teacher to have a positive relationship, and resonate with, their students.
  • Practitioners of this programme strengthen their resolve in the face of classroom disruptions and challenges with students, demonstrating an exceptional degree of prowess in their critical thinking and problem solving skills.

Entry Requirements

  1. At least Five (5) CSEC subjects (Grades 1 or 2; or Grade 3 from June 1998) or GCE equivalent. These five subjects should include:
    • English A;
    • Mathematics;
    • Science — Integrated Science, Human & Social Biology, Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Biology, or Physics
    • One other academic subject;
    In addition, persons who do not have at least one pure Science subject at Grades 1 or 2 will be required to register and successfully complete a Science Access course prior to registration.Interview with applicant is required.Persons who already possessed a UWI Associate Degree in Primary Education can matriculate into Year 3 of the Programme.
