About Functional Kwéyòl

The Functional Kwéyòl course is designed for learners who wish to gain basic proficiency in the Kwéyòl language. The course focuses on helping learners develop basic listening, reading, speaking and writing skills in the target language within the framework of multiple literacies.

Learners will gain an appreciation for the Kwéyòl language and culture through exposure to its linguistic components in authentic contexts, thus facilitating basic communicative competence in Kwéyòl.

Learning Outcomes

  • Learners engage in basic spoken dialogue in Kwéyòl, about oneself.
  • Learners write in Kwéyòl according to the accepted orthography used by the Saint Lucia Folk Research Centre.
  • Students interpret learnt expressions accurately by providing appropriate responses.
  • Students differentiate similar Kwéyòl sounds to derive an appropriate meaning.
  • Students ask questions in Kwéyòl using appropriate interrogative structures.
  • Learners demonstrate an appreciation for Kwéyòl as language and culture by participating in related activities and traditions.
