The Associate Degree in Spanish programme seeks to;

• Assist significantly in the development of an individual who is cognizant of and sensitive to past and current socio-economic issues, which are instrumental in forging the existence of the Caribbean people on the global scene;
• Develop an understanding of and an appreciation for the dynamic hybridity of Saint Lucia’s creoleness in the Caribbean as it relates to language, music, dance, art, literature and built heritage;
• Enable students to develop the skills needed in order to communicate and orate clearly and effectively in any forum, public or otherwise, and from an informed perspective;
• Foster understanding and appropriate use of language registers in their relevant contexts, as well as word etymology and semantics in a range of receptor contexts (reading, listening);

At the end of this programme, learners will be able to use the Spanish language to;

• Discuss opinions on a wide range of current topics;
• Identify the main ideas in newscasts, radio and TV interviews;
• Respond to questions based on listening and reading materials;
• Use suitable and varied vocabulary, idioms and grammatical structures to present information;
• Evaluate strengths and weaknesses of arguments;
• Find literal and implied meaning in texts;
• Analyse literary works;
• Conduct research effectively and efficiently through the major research skills;
• Value characteristics of people from different cultures and socio-economic backgrounds;
• Value collaborative work.
