HJFL Joins International Federation of Library Associations

The Sir Arthur Lewis Community College is proud to announce that its Hunter J. François Library (HJFL) has joined the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA).

As a part of this global network, we are not only connected to the latest professional knowledge and standards but also empowered to take part in shaping the future of libraries and information access, — Kathy Birch McDiarmed, Head Librarian at HJFL

The IFLA is an independent, international nonprofit organization that supports library associations, libraries, information services, librarians, and their communities worldwide.

McDiarmed highlighted how tremendous an opportunity this membership was in providing high quality library services and resources to students, and faculty;

At the cornerstone of our mission is providing instructional and research support to the students and faculty of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College, and this affiliation strengthens our ability to fulfill that mission. — Kathy Birch McDiarmed

With IFLA membership, the Hunter J. François Library gains access to a wealth of benefits, including the ability to collaborate with peers worldwide, participate in professional development activities, and stay informed about significant developments in the library field. Additionally, the library will have the opportunity to participate in upcoming events like the IFLA Information Futures Summit in Brisbane, Australia, at a reduced registration fee for all its staff members.

“I am committed to advancing not only the modernization of our library services but also the preservation of our documentary heritage in Saint Lucia. Through IFLA, we can further our mission to provide credible information resources and support the academic pursuits of our college community,” said McDiarmed.

About The Hunter J. François Library

The Hunter J. François Library was established in the 1990s and named in honor of Mr. Hunter J. François, a renowned Saint Lucian intellectual and the first Minister of Education.

The library has been instrumental in advancing access to academic resources and support for SALCC students and faculty. With the recent opening of the Derek Walcott Library, demand for research services has grown, reinforcing the library’s role as an essential educational resource for the college and the broader community.
