Health Aide Studies

This program is designed to prepare learners for employment as Health Aides, or Orderlies in various settings in the health care delivery system. The course comprises three components: a Health Science core, which introduces fundamental concepts, principles and competencies for Health Aides and the Technical and Clinical/practical competencies taught in the clinical laboratory and a practicum various health care settings. During the practicum experience learners are afforded opportunities to provide basic patient care and other attending skills required across the health care system i.e. the community setting and in both general and specialty hospitals or other long term care institutions. Participants are awarded a certificate upon successful completion.

Programme Learning Outcomes:

On completion of this programme learners will be able to:

  1. Demonstrate knowledge of the health care delivery system and health occupations.
  2. Apply six concepts of wellness and disease prevention in meeting the basic needs of clients.
  3. Demonstrate appropriate use of basic medial terminology and numeration skills as appropriate for job requirements.
  4. Demonstrate compliance with legal and ethical principles in performing job responsibilities particularly with regards to accountability and confidentiality and patient rights.
  5. Demonstrate the ability to communicate and use interpersonal skills effectively.
  6. Maintain appropriate boundaries in care-provider and client relationships.
  7. Use assertive communication skills in client and peer interactions.
  8. Describe the basic structure and function of the human body.
  9. Apply the basic concepts and principles of mental health.
  10. Provide for the basic needs of clients based on their developmental needs.
  11. Provide for the physical comfort and the health and safety of clients.
  12. Respond to emergency situations appropriately.
  13. Practice the principles of infection control.
  14. Demonstrate knowledge of blood borne diseases including HIV AIDS.
  15. Provide care to meet the basic biological, psychological and social needs of clients.
  16. Demonstrate employability skills and work ethics.
  17. Function as a member on a multidisciplinary team.
  18. Perform duties and responsibilities of Health Aide as a member of the multidisciplinary team.
  19. Demonstrate effective use of verbal and written communication skills including use of medical terminology.
  20. Maintain appropriate and effective interpersonal relationships with clients and peers.
  21. Demonstrate correct application of basic math skills related to job responsibilities.
  22. Demonstrate the ability to perform with the legal and ethical bounds and scope of a Health Aide.

  24. Perform physical comfort and safety measures within the established standards.
  25. Provide personal client care.
  26. Perform selected client care procedures.
  27. Apply principles of nutrition in client care.
  28. Provide care for geriatric patients appropriate for their age and developmental needs.
  29. Apply principles of infection control and demonstrates knowledge of blood borne diseases including HIV/AIDS.
  30. Provide biological, psychological and social support to clients and their families.
  31. Demonstrate organizational skills in following the client care plan.
  32. Assist with restorative/rehabilitation activities.
  33. Demonstrate acceptable employability skills and consistency in work ethics.

Requirements for programme Entry:

  • Literacy and Numerical Skills.
  • Minimum age requirement:17 years by August 31 of the year the applicant is admitted to Health Aide Studies.
  • Interview and Assessment of Written and Oral Communication Skills.
  • Knowledge of training and practice; and, Professional demeanor.
  • Medical Certificate of Fitness Required ONLY on successful completion of the interview and assessment of candidates.
  • Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) Certification preferred (course offer at Red Cross for a fee).
  • Two References: School Principal, Teachers, Employers or other relevant persons.
  • Cost: As stipulated by the College and are subject to change Plus Books, Uniforms, School & Clinical Supplies, Transportation to and from clinical training sites.
  • Classes begin August and January each academic year and maybe suspended at intervals.
