The Morne Playing Field will soon become one of St Lucia’s premiere sports facilities. On Tuesday December 1st, 2015, Management, staff and students of the College joined officials from the Ministries of Education and Youth and Sports, The National Lotteries Authority, The St Lucia Social Development fund and media personnel for the sod breaking ceremony, marking the commencement of rehabilitation works on the playing field.

The Chairperson of the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College Board of Governors, Ms Fortuna Anthony, welcomed the gathering to the ceremony and praised all contributors to the project. SALCC Sports Coordinator, Mr Gilroy Hall, gave a brief history of the College’s role in developing the field since 1999 and justified this current investment with statistics on the categories and numbers of users who have been seriously affected with the deterioration of the facility. The Minister of Education, himself a former Lecturer at the College, reiterated the important link between education and physical activity and recounted some of his childhood and teenage experiences at this very facility. The Minister of Youth Development and Sports, Hon. Shawn Edward, explained that the decision to make such a substantial investment in the facility was a consequence of both need and common sense. He further stated that his Ministry’s facility development thrust was in keeping with the findings of numerous needs assessment surveys and he pledged additional support to the efforts of the College in developing and sustaining a more inclusive and vibrant sports programme.

Following the sod turning activity the officials were taken on a tour of the College Gymnasium for which support had been solicited by both the Chairperson of the Board and the Sports Coordinator in their remarks. Recognizing the vast potential of this support facility, the contributors to the playing field initiative have also pledged support to the gym improvement project.

Both of these initiatives are expected to be completed within the next few months.
